Overview

The Marienplatz has been the center of Munich since the city was founded in 1158, and distances in the city are still measured from here. The Glockenspiel in the tower of the Neues Rathaus plays daily at 11:00 and 12:00, in summer also at 17:00. München Tourismus runs a two-hour guided walk through the old town every day at 11:30, in German: about 3 km at an easy pace, with the Frauenkirche, the Hofbräuhaus, Maximilianstraße, the Residenz and the Feldherrnhalle, ending near the Viktualienmarkt.

The Zugspitze (2,962 m), Germany's highest mountain, is a day trip by train: the RB6 from München Hbf to Garmisch-Partenkirchen, then the cog railway of the Zugspitzbahn, whose station is about 200 m from the west exit of Garmisch-Partenkirchen station. From the Eibsee stop, the Seilbahn Zugspitze cable car reaches the summit in 10 minutes.

The walks at the foot of the mountain, the Eibsee loop and the Partnachklamm, are in the Zugspitze, Eibsee & Partnachklamm guide. For more time in the city, see the Munich city guide on AnnaMundo.

Difficulty:

The old-town walk is at an easy pace on city streets and is only partly barrier-free. The Zugspitze day trip needs no hiking: train, cog railway and cable car go all the way.

Food & drink:

The guided walk ends near the Viktualienmarkt, with market stalls and a beer garden.
