About this guide

The Tour du Mont Blanc (TMB) is the most walked long-distance trail in the Alps and arguably in the world. The full circuit of 170 km encircles the Mont Blanc massif through three countries — France, Italy, and Switzerland — crossing nine mountain passes and covering 10,000 m of cumulative ascent.

The numbers

  • Distance: ~170 km (full circuit)
  • Typical duration: 7–11 days
  • Cumulative ascent: ~10,000 m
  • High point: Grand Col Ferret (2,537 m) — France–Italy border
  • Countries: France, Italy, Switzerland
  • Best season: late June–mid September

The experience

The TMB is exceptional in its variety: from the chaotic glamour of Chamonix to the quiet Val Ferret in Italy, to the gentler Swiss pastures around Champex and Trient. Each country segment has a distinct character. The huts (refuges) range from sparkling CAF refuges with four-course dinners to tiny Italian rifugi with handmade pasta. Booking months ahead is essential for July–August.

Classic itinerary (11 days, Chamonix clockwise)

  • Stage 1: Chamonix → Les Houches → Les Contamines (18 km, 1,000 m)
  • Stage 2: Les Contamines → Refuge des Mottets (14 km, 1,300 m)
  • Stage 3: Les Mottets → Courmayeur via Grand Col du Mont Joli (14 km, 1,200 m) — hardest day
  • Stage 4: Courmayeur rest day / Aosta Valley exploration
  • Stage 5: Courmayeur → Refuge Elena via Grand Col Ferret (2,537 m) (17 km, 1,600 m)
  • Stage 6: Refuge Elena → La Fouly → Champex (21 km, 800 m) — enters Switzerland
  • Stage 7: Champex → Trient via Fenêtre d'Arpette (2,665 m) or Bovine alp route (18 km, 1,500 m)
  • Stage 8: Trient → Chamonix via Tête aux Vents (20 km, 1,400 m)

Shorter versions (7–9 days) skip the Italian Val Ferret or combine stages.

Key logistics

  • Hut reservations: mandatory in peak season. Book online 3–6 months ahead. Key huts: Refuge de la Balme, Rifugio Bonatti (Italian side, finest location on the route), Refuge du Col de la Croix du Bonhomme.
  • Gear: trekking poles essential; hut sleeping sheet/liner required in most refuges; rain gear mandatory.
  • Navigation: well-signed throughout; TMB app (OSMand or dedicated app) useful for real-time weather.
  • Fitness: comfortable hiking 6–8 h/day with a 10–12 kg pack; no technical terrain.

Why it earns a dedicated guide

The TMB is the single highest-traffic search query for alpine trekking globally. Having a well-structured guide covering the full route, best huts, weather windows, and logistics converts consistently to pass subscribers.
