About this guide
Chamonix lies at the foot of Mont Blanc. Its ski areas – Brévent-Flégère, Grands Montets and Balme (Le Tour – Vallorcine) – share one pass, CHAMONIX Le Pass, with 104 km of runs between 1,000 and 2,765 m; only Brévent and Flégère are linked. The MONT BLANC Unlimited pass covers 1,003 km in 10 ski areas.
From the Aiguille du Midi (3,842 m), the Vallée Blanche descends more than 20 km and 2,800 m: an off-piste glacier route, not marked or secured, with crevasses and seracs; a high-mountain guide is very strongly advised. At the Grands Montets, the summit lift has been closed since the 2018 fire; a new one is planned for winter 2027–28.
- Difficulty
Runs for all levels; beginner areas at La Vormaine, Les Chosalets, Le Savoy, Plateau 2000 (Planpraz), Plateau de Lognan and Les Planards. The Vallée Blanche is unmarked, unsecured glacier terrain.
- Season
Winter 2026/27, partly depending on snow: Flégère and Grands Montets from 28 November 2026, Brévent and Balme from 12 December, Aiguille du Midi from 19 December; until 11 April (Flégère, Balme), 18 April (Brévent), 2 May (Grands Montets) and 30 May 2027 (Aiguille du Midi).
- Getting there
The Mont-Blanc Express runs from Saint-Gervais-Le Fayet via Les Houches, Chamonix and Argentière to Martigny; Geneva Cornavin – Chamonix takes about 2 h 40 by train.
