Overview

The Seceda rises above Ortisei (St. Ulrich) in Val Gardena, at the edge of the Puez-Geisler nature park. Its ridge path, the "Ridge Line", about 1 km in all, runs from the top station of the Seceda cable car past the summit cross at 2,519 m, about 400 m from the station, towards the Panascharte, with dramatic views over the cliffs; at the summit a viewpoint names the surrounding peaks. East of the cross, path 6 continues through a fee-paying turnstile towards the Panascharte; the tourism board notes the views are already there from the ridge above.

This guide takes two of the official ways up. From St. Christina the Col Raiser gondola leads up in about 15 minutes; from its top station a forest road and path 1A climb to the Seceda. From Ortisei a long, demanding ascent leads from the valley station of the Seceda cable car through the Val d'Anna past Costamula and two huts to the summit. Both end at the summit; the Seceda cable car takes you back down to Ortisei.

Difficulty:

The route from Col Raiser is moderate, about 420 m up on a forest road and path. The ascent from Ortisei is difficult for its length: about 1,260 m up over 7.6 km. Early in the summer season some sections can still be under snow.

Food & drink:

Utia Seceda by the top station; on the way up from Ortisei Costamula, the Curona Hut and the Sofie Hut.

Getting there in detail

Ortisei: buses 350 from Bolzano, 360 from Bressanone, 172 from Castelrotto and 351 from Chiusa run to the Antoniusplatz; from there the "La Curta" escalators and moving walkways reach the Seceda valley station in five minutes, where there are a covered garage and a large outdoor car park (both paid). St. Christina: buses 356 and 358 run direct to the Col Raiser valley station; there are three car parks at the valley station (paid).

Latest start = the earlier of last bus or sunset, minus route time and 30 minutes. Sunset is calculated for the trailhead; in shaded terrain it gets dark earlier.
