Verona

🇮🇹 Verona, Veneto, Italy

About this guide

The Arena, built by the Romans around the mid-1st century AD for about 30,000 spectators, is the ancient amphitheatre with the best degree of preservation in the world; since Verdi's Aida in 1913 it has hosted a summer opera festival. Piazza delle Erbe was the Roman forum, and across the Adige the Roman Theatre climbs the slope of the San Pietro hill.

Difficulty

City streets and squares; the stairway from Ponte Pietra up to Castel San Pietro is steep, and the funicular is the alternative.

Season

Year-round. The Arena di Verona Opera Festival runs from 11 June to 11 September 2027. From April to October stage set-ups mean the Arena can't be fully visited.

Getting there

Verona Porta Nuova is the main station, with trains from Munich via Innsbruck and from across Italy; long-distance buses (ATV) run from Lake Garda. By car on the A22 from Austria or the A4 Milan–Venice; most of the centre is a restricted traffic zone (ZTL), so park outside it.

Food & drink

Verona's osterie and wine bars: try risotto al tastasal or polenta with a glass of Amarone della Valpolicella.
