About this guide

Trento is one of Italy's most underrated cities — a compact Renaissance gem where Austrian and Italian cultures meet. The Piazza del Duomo is one of the finest medieval squares in northern Italy, flanked by the Romanesque cathedral and the Palazzo Pretorio. The city's most famous landmark is the Castello del Buonconsiglio, a medieval and Renaissance fortress that dominates the eastern edge of the old town.

Trento is also home to MUSE — the Science Museum designed by Renzo Piano, one of the best science museums in Italy. Built into the former industrial district, it covers Alpine ecosystems, evolution and sustainability in a spectacular building that alone is worth the visit.

The Alpine access from Trento is exceptional. The Brenta Dolomites — a UNESCO World Heritage site separate from the main Dolomites group — are 30-45 minutes by cable car from Madonna di Campiglio. The Paganella plateau offers both summer hiking and winter skiing within 40 minutes. Lake Garda's northern shore (Riva del Garda) is 30 minutes south by bus.

Trento wine is exceptional — the Trentino DOC covers Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay and the local Teroldego red. The Strada del Vino runs south through the Adige valley — a perfect cycling day trip from the city.
