About this guide
Trento, the capital of Trentino-Alto Adige, is the city of the prince-bishops and of the Council of Trent. Its old town holds the cathedral of San Vigilio and the Castello del Buonconsiglio; the MUSE science museum occupies a building by Renzo Piano. The Brenta Dolomites, one of the nine systems of the Dolomites World Heritage Site, rise above Madonna di Campiglio.
On the Piazza del Duomo, the Fountain of Neptune stands before the cathedral, rebuilt from 1212 in Romanesque-Lombard style; the Palazzo Pretorio beside it houses the Diocesan Museum. The Castello del Buonconsiglio, the region's largest historical site, was the prince-bishops' residence; in its Torre Aquila, the Cycle of the Months (around 1400) is a masterpiece of International Gothic.
