This gentle yet unforgettable route offers one of the most iconic views in Switzerland: a sweeping, unobstructed panorama of 29 four-thousand-meter peaks, including the legendary Matterhorn, rising like jagged sentinels above the Gorner Glacier. What makes this hike truly special is not just the scale of the scenery, but how effortlessly it delivers it. The trail begins at Gornergrat, a high-altitude viewpoint reached by the Gornergrat Railway, one of Switzerland’s most scenic cogwheel trains. From the station, the path leads west along a gently undulating ridge, following the contours of the mountainside. The terrain is mostly wide, gravelly trails with occasional rocky sections, all clearly marked and free of technical difficulty. This is a T1 route, meaning no scrambling, no exposure, and no need for special equipment—just steady walking on a well-defined path. The real challenge, if you can call it that, is resisting the urge to stop every few minutes for another photograph.

The first and most dramatic is the view from the Gornergrat summit itself, where the Matterhorn dominates the skyline to the south, its pyramid shape reflected in the still waters of the Riffelsee below. As you walk, the perspective shifts, revealing the Monte Rosa massif, Switzerland’s highest mountain group, with its glaciated flanks shimmering in the sunlight. The Gorner Glacier, one of the largest in the Alps, snakes its way down the valley, its crevasses and icefalls visible from the trail. Along the way, you’ll pass the Riffelalp Resort, a cluster of traditional wooden chalets that offer a perfect spot for a mid-hike coffee or lunch. Most hikers complete it in around three and a half hours, though it’s easy to linger longer, especially if you stop to soak in the views or enjoy a meal at one of the mountain restaurants. The best time to hike is from June through October, when the trail is free of snow and the railway is fully operational. July and August are the busiest months, with warm temperatures and clear skies, while September and October offer quieter trails and the chance to see the larch trees turn golden against the backdrop of the peaks.

This hike is suitable for anyone with a basic level of fitness. The elevation gain is minimal, and the path is never steep, but the high altitude—starting at 3,089 meters—means you’ll want to take it easy if you’re not acclimatized. Bring layers, as temperatures can drop quickly, even in summer, and a windproof jacket is essential for the exposed ridge sections. Sun protection is a must, too; the UV index is high at this altitude, and the reflection off the snow and glaciers can be intense. Comfortable hiking shoes with good grip are recommended, as some sections can be loose underfoot. And don’t forget your camera—this is one of those rare hikes where the photos almost never do the views justice.
