Arolla lies in the Val d'Arolla, a side valley of the Val d'Hérens, with Mont Collon at the head of the valley. From the 19th century onwards the village developed into a centre for mountaineering and skiing; it is named after the Arolla pine. Three official hikes start in Arolla or at nearby La Gouille.
The walk to the glacier follows a small road up the valley and comes back the same way. The Lac Bleu loop climbs from La Gouille, steeper at first, then through a larch wood. The Aiguilles Rouges loop climbs steadily to the hut; after a short further climb, a steep descent leads to Lac Bleu.
Bus 381 from Sion to Arolla, changing at Les Haudères, about 1 h 15; the Lac Bleu loop starts at the stop Arolla, La Gouille on the same line.
Cabane des Aiguilles Rouges (2,821 m) on the Aiguilles Rouges loop; current opening dates on the hut's website.
