About this guide

Lugano sits on the shores of Lake Lugano in the canton of Ticino — the Swiss canton where Italian is the official language. The result is a uniquely relaxed Swiss city: espresso culture, lakefront promenades, piazzas and trattorias, but with Swiss precision underneath.

The city is compact and walkable. The Lungolago promenade stretches along the lake with views across to Monte San Salvatore and Monte Brè — both accessible by funicular. The old town's Piazza della Riforma is the social heart, lined with café terraces and the neoclassical municipal building.

Hiking access is immediate. Monte San Salvatore (912m) rises directly from the lake — the funicular from Paradiso takes 12 minutes to the summit with panoramic views over the lake and toward the Alps. Monte Brè (933m) offers similar views from the east side. The Monte Generoso (1,704m) cogwheel railway, 30 minutes by train, reaches a stunning summit plateau with a Mario Botta-designed restaurant.

Lugano is also a gateway to the Verzasca Valley — a wild granite gorge with emerald water, stone villages and the world's second-highest bungee jump at the Contra Dam (GoldenEye film location). The valley is 45 minutes by car or bus from Lugano.
