About this guide
Lugano, the largest city in Ticino, lies in a bay of Lake Lugano ringed by viewing mountains; its historic centre is traffic-free, and the Piazza della Riforma, named in 1830 after the constitutional reform, is the city's main meeting place. Above Paradiso rises Monte San Salvatore, Lugano's own mountain; across the bay, the Monte Brè funicular has run since 1908.
- Difficulty
A mountain trail with a steep climb through the woods to San Salvatore; the path down towards Ciona is rocky at first, and the walk ends on a long stone staircase.
- Season
The San Salvatore funicular usually runs from mid-March to early November. The funicular and the summit restaurant are closed from 9 November 2026 to 12 March 2027.
- Getting there
Start in Lugano Paradiso, at the San Salvatore funicular's valley station. Back from Morcote by boat, PostBus or train.
