About this guide

The Pizol Five Lakes Trail is a jewel of the Swiss Alps, a route that distills the very essence of alpine beauty into a single, accessible day hike. What makes this trail truly special is not just the five crystalline lakes it visits, each with its own character and charm, but the way it delivers a high-altitude experience without demanding technical skill or extreme fitness. This is a walk that rewards you with sweeping vistas, vibrant wildflowers, and the quiet majesty of the mountains, all while remaining within reach of casual hikers. It’s no wonder this trail has been voted Switzerland’s best mountain trail—it offers a perfect blend of accessibility, scenery, and that ineffable alpine magic.

The trail begins at the Pizolhütte, a cozy mountain hut perched at 2,227 meters, easily reached by cable car from the valley below. From here, the path unfolds in a gentle loop, winding through a landscape of rolling green meadows, rocky outcrops, and shimmering lakes. The terrain is mostly well-trodden dirt paths and rocky sections, with some gentle ascents and descents, but nothing too steep or exposed. The first lake, Wildsee, greets you almost immediately, its deep blue waters framed by jagged peaks. It’s a stunning introduction, but the best is yet to come.

As you continue, the trail leads to Schottensee, a smaller, shallower lake often dotted with wildflowers in summer. The path then climbs slightly to the third lake, Schwarzsee, its dark waters contrasting with the bright alpine sky. The fourth lake, Baschalvasee, is perhaps the most dramatic, nestled in a rocky bowl with Pizol’s glacier looming in the background. The final lake, Wangsersee, is the largest and most serene, offering a peaceful conclusion to the journey. Along the way, you’ll pass through patches of alpine vegetation, cross small streams, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, including the iconic Pizol glacier.

The key waypoints are the lakes themselves, each offering a moment to pause, take in the view, and perhaps dip your toes in the icy water. The trail is well-marked and maintained, with clear signposts guiding you along the way. While the elevation gain is modest—around 400 meters—the high-altitude setting means the air is thinner, so take your time and enjoy the scenery. The total walking time is around four hours, but with stops for photos, snacks, and simply soaking in the views, you’ll likely want to allow a full day.

The best time to hike the Pizol Five Lakes Trail is from July to September, when the snow has melted, the lakes are fully thawed, and the alpine meadows are in full bloom. July and August are the busiest months, so if you prefer a quieter experience, consider hiking in early September. The trail is classified as T2, meaning it’s suitable for hikers with basic fitness and no fear of heights, though sturdy footwear is a must—ankle-supporting hiking boots will help with the occasional rocky or uneven sections.

For this hike, pack layers to adapt to the changing mountain weather. Even in summer, temperatures can drop quickly, and wind or rain is always a possibility. Bring a waterproof jacket, a warm mid-layer, and a hat and gloves for cooler moments. Sun protection is essential, too—sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat will shield you from the strong alpine sun. Carry plenty of water (at least two liters) and some high-energy snacks to keep you fueled. Trekking poles can be helpful for the steeper sections, though they’re not strictly necessary.

The Pizol Five Lakes Trail is a hike that lingers in the memory long after you’ve descended back to the valley. It’s a route that proves you don’t need to tackle extreme terrain to experience the magic of the Alps—just a sense of adventure, a love of the outdoors, and a willingness to let the mountains work their quiet spell on you. Whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a first-time visitor to the Alps, this trail offers a day of pure, unadulterated alpine joy.
