Salzburg sits in a bowl of mountains at the edge of the Austrian Alps. The Hohensalzburg Fortress dominates the skyline from its hilltop perch, while the baroque Old Town below — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is one of the best-preserved city centres in the German-speaking world.
Mozart was born here in 1756 and the city wears his legacy lightly and proudly in equal measure. The Mozarteum, the birthplace museum on Getreidegasse and the summer Salzburg Festival (July-August) draw music lovers from around the world. The Sound of Music filming locations are scattered throughout the city and surrounding Salzkammergut.
Alpine access is exceptional. Berchtesgaden National Park (Germany) is 30 minutes by bus — the Königssee is one of the most beautiful lakes in the Alps. The Dachstein massif is 1.5 hours east. Hallstatt, one of Austria's most photographed villages, is 1 hour by bus and boat.
Stay in Salzburg before or after any trip to the Eastern Alps. The city's restaurants and Augustiner beer hall provide excellent recovery from a day in the mountains.
