Hallstatt lies in the Hallstatt-Dachstein / Salzkammergut Cultural Landscape, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. According to the Salzwelten, salt was mined above the village 7,000 years ago, and an epoch of prehistory bears its name. The Beinhaus holds 1,200 skulls, 610 of them painted.

The official village tour leads from the north end through the lanes to the market square and along the lakeside promenade to Lahn, then back past the church and the Beinhaus. Across the lake, the Krippenstein cable car climbs about 1,600 m from Obertraun; from the top station a signposted trail leads to the 5fingers, five walkways above a drop of over 400 m.

Difficulty: The village tour runs through the lanes and along the lakeside promenade; the signed path from the top station to the 5fingers is suitable for strollers.
Season: Village tour year-round. Krippenstein cable car and 5fingers 1 May – 1 November 2026. The Salzwelten reopened on 29 August 2026; the footpath up to the high valley is still closed.
Getting there: By train to Hallstatt station, then by boat across the lake; by bus to Hallstatt Lahn. For the Krippenstein: bus stop Obertraun Dachsteinseilbahn, or train to Obertraun-Dachsteinhöhlen and about 45 minutes on foot.
