Bolzano: Old Town, Ötzi & the Ritten

The heart of Bolzano (Bozen) is the Laubengasse, an arcaded street more than 300 m long laid out in the 12th century. At its western end the Obstmarkt holds a fruit and vegetable market; to the south lies Waltherplatz, the main square, with the Gothic cathedral beside it.

The South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology shows Ötzi, the Iceman: found on a glacier in 1991 and about 5,300 years old, he is the world's oldest naturally preserved wet mummy. East of the station, the Rittner Seilbahn gondola runs up to Oberbozen (1,227 m) on the Ritten plateau, with views of the Rosengarten and the Schlern; walks start at the top station, for example to the earth pyramids.
