About this guide
Triglav National Park covers the Julian Alps around Triglav (2,864 m), Slovenia's highest mountain. On the Bohinj side lies Lake Bohinj, the largest natural permanent lake in Slovenia; to the west the Soča runs through the Great Soča Gorge.
The routes: an easy loop around Lake Bohinj from Ribčev Laz along the south and north shores; a loop from Ukanc to the Savica waterfall; and the long ascent of Triglav from Bohinj through the Triglav Lakes Valley, a tour of two or three days with nights in mountain huts.
- Difficulty
Lake loop: easy. Savica: moderate, with many steps. Triglav: the final section from Kredarica is a very demanding and exposed trail with steel cables; helmet, harness and self-belay kit are required. Every route to the summit takes at least 6 hours each way. Only guides with an international IFMGA licence may lead tours.
- Season
The huts in the high mountains are typically open from May to October; in summer, book ahead. The Savica waterfall entry closes in heavy rain, storms, snow or ice.
- Getting there
Lake loop: start at the tourist information centre in Ribčev Laz. Savica loop: Ukanc bus station. Great Soča Gorge: on the Bovec–Vršič road, about 11 km from Bovec; park at the Lepena turn-off or by the upper end.
- Food & drink
Koča pri Savici by the waterfall car park (closed in winter). On the Triglav route: Koča pri Triglavskih jezerih (1,685 m), Zasavska koča na Prehodavcih (2,071 m), Planika Hut (Dom Planika pod Triglavom).
