Overview
Bled Island is the only natural island on a lake in Slovenia. Traditional pletna boats row visitors across, and 99 steps lead up to the Church of the Mother of God on the Lake. Bled Castle stands on a cliff above the north shore. Written sources mention it in 1011, which makes it the oldest castle in Slovenia. The Vintgar gorge, 4 km from Bled, has a 1.6 km path between steep rock walls. It is open from April to October, and booking entry online is recommended.

The best-known view of the lake is from Mala Osojnica (685 m), above Velika Zaka on the west shore. Turizem Bled's loop climbs a steep forest path to the viewpoint, with built-in steel stairs on the steepest part. It then crosses to Ojstrica (611 m) and returns to Velika Zaka: 2.4 km, 246 m up, about an hour, moderate. The tourist board advises against it in winter and when the path is icy.
Mala Osojnica loop: moderate (Turizem Bled); steep, with steel stairs and iron and wooden handrails, the climb to Ojstrica short, steep and rocky.
No hut on the Mala Osojnica loop: bring water (Turizem Bled).
Map & profile
Mala Osojnica and Ojstrica
From Velika Zaka on the west shore, a steep forest path climbs to Mala Osojnica. Built-in steel stairs cover the steepest part, with iron and some less reliable wooden handrails. The viewpoint is fenced and has a bench. The path crosses the small plateau to the saddle below Velika Osojnica and descends towards Zaka. A short, steep and rocky spur leads up Ojstrica (611 m); back down the same way and on to Velika Zaka. No hut on the way: bring water.

Getting there in detail
Buses run from Ljubljana via Kranj and Radovljica to Bled bus station, a 3-minute walk from the lake; timetables at AP Ljubljana and Arriva. By train, Lesce-Bled on the main line from Ljubljana towards Villach is 4 km from the center, with Bled's bus stop opposite the station. Bled Jezero, on the Jesenice – Nova Gorica line, is 1.5 km from the center and a 10-minute walk from Velika Zaka, where the Mala Osojnica loop starts. Ljubljana's bus station has been at a temporary site on Masarykova cesta since 24 August 2026.
Latest start = the earlier of last bus or sunset, minus route time and 30 minutes. Sunset is calculated for the trailhead; in shaded terrain it gets dark earlier.
