About this guide

Ljubljana punches far above its size. The Ljubljanica river curves through a compact old town of pastel baroque buildings, triple-bridge crossings and lively open-air cafés. The hilltop Ljubljana Castle offers panoramic views over the city and toward the Julian Alps on clear days.

The city centre is almost entirely car-free, making it one of Europe's most pleasant capitals to explore on foot. The Central Market along the river is the best place to try Slovenian produce — local cheese, honey and wine before or after a mountain trip.

From Ljubljana, Triglav National Park is just 1 hour by car or bus. Lake Bled is 45 minutes. The Soča Valley (emerald river, Via Ferrata routes) is 1.5 hours. Ljubljana makes a perfect 1-2 day base for exploring the entire Julian Alps region.

Accommodation is affordable by Western European standards and the food scene has improved dramatically in recent years — Slovenian cuisine blends Alpine, Mediterranean and Balkan influences in an unexpected and delicious way.
