Alta Via 1: Lago di Braies – Belluno
About this guide
The Alta Via 1 crosses the Dolomites from north to south, from Lago di Braies to Belluno, linking mountain huts in 12 official stages as described by Cortina d'Ampezzo tourism. Every stage is rated for experienced hikers, and the classic finish over the Schiara is a via ferrata.
- Difficulty
Every stage is for experienced hikers: long days and steep passages, some short sections with fixed ropes. The classic finish to the Rifugio 7° Alpini (stage 11) is a via ferrata: harness, via ferrata set and helmet are needed.
- Season
Most huts open from mid-June to mid-September; some from early June or into October (see each hut).
- Getting there
Start at Lago di Braies; at the end, from Bolzano Bellunese to Belluno by taxi or public transport, or on foot by road.
- Food & drink
Hut to hut; each stage ends at a staffed mountain hut (see the places).
