About this guide

The Lünersee lies at 1,970 m in the Rätikon, one of the largest high mountain lakes in Vorarlberg. It is also a reservoir for power generation: when the Lünersee plant opened in 1958 it was considered the most powerful pumped-storage plant in the world. The lake covers around 112 hectares.

The Lünerseebahn climbs in six minutes from the end of the Brandnertal to the dam, where the circular trail starts at the mountain station by the Douglass Hütte. The path goes round the lake in either direction, past the Alpe Lünersee halfway, with views of the lake and the Rätikon mountains, and returns to the mountain station; the cable car takes you back down.

Difficulty

An easy path round the lake. Clockwise, a short climb comes first, then the path is downhill or flat; anticlockwise, the descent comes at the end. Suitable for strollers anticlockwise as far as the Alpe Lünersee and back the same way.

Season

June to October. The Lünerseebahn usually runs from late May to late October; current dates: Golm Silvretta Lünersee Tourismus.

Getting there

Bus 580 to the stop Lünerseebahn, or by car to the paid car park at the valley station in Brand. Dogs on a lead and with a muzzle in the station area and on the cable car; no bikes on the cable car or round the lake.

Food & drink

Douglass Hütte at the mountain station; Alpe Lünersee halfway round the lake.
