Zermatt — Matterhorn Ski Paradise

Zermatt sits beneath the Matterhorn — the most photographed peak in the Alps — in a car-free village at the head of the Mattertal valley. The ski area spans 360km of pistes across five sectors, linked by an extensive lift network, with skiing possible on the Theodul Glacier year-round. Klein Matterhorn, at 3,883m, is the highest cable car station in the Alps and opens onto glacier terrain with views of 14 four-thousand-metre peaks. Few ski areas anywhere combine this much vertical, this much glacier terrain, and this iconic a backdrop.

The terrain suits every level. Sunnegga and Rothorn, reached by underground funicular from the village, offer wide cruising pistes ideal for intermediates and families, with some of the best Matterhorn views in the resort. Schwarzsee and the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise area hold steeper, more technical runs for experienced skiers, including access to long off-piste descents. A lift connection over the border to Cervinia, Italy, adds another 200km of pistes and the novelty of skiing between two countries without removing your skis.

Zermatt is covered by the Swiss ski pass network and — like the village itself — is entirely car-free. Visitors park in Täsch and take the 12-minute shuttle train into the village, or arrive directly by train from Visp or Brig. Snow reliability is excellent thanks to altitude: pistes typically hold good conditions from December through April, and the Theodul Glacier area stays open through summer for early-season training and year-round skiing.

The village itself is as much a draw as the skiing. Traditional wooden chalets, upscale boutiques and a growing food scene line the pedestrian streets. Heinrichshaus and Papperla Pub are reliable après-ski stops, while the evening scene extends well past the lifts closing. At the top end, The Omnia and the historic Mont Cervin Palace offer some of the finest luxury lodging in the Alps, both within walking distance of the main lift stations.
