Overview
This guide takes five routes published by Grindelwald Tourismus and Jungfrau Region Tourismus. The walk from First to the Bachalpsee and back is the short one; in winter, route No. 50 leads from First to the lake. From the Grosse Scheidegg, reached by bus 128 in summer, a gravel road leads to First. The Panorama Trail runs from Männlichen to Kleine Scheidegg, facing the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The longest takes about six hours: 16 km (10 mi) from Schynige Platte past Männdlenen and over the Faulhorn to the Bachalpsee and First.

Grindelwald Tourismus grades the Bachalpsee walk, Grosse Scheidegg – First and the Panorama Trail easy (the Panorama Trail T1). The crossing from Schynige Platte is moderate: 16 km (10 mi), 835 m (2,740 ft) up and 629 m (2,064 ft) down, the highest point the Faulhorn. The winter route to the Bachalpsee is medium; after snowfall the ground can be soft and harder to walk on. The Eiger Trail from Eigergletscher to Alpiglen is medium (SchweizMobil route 353, mountain hiking trail; Jungfrau Railways: moderate).
Berggasthaus First at the top station; the Berghotel Grosse Scheidegg at the start of the route to First; the Berghaus Männlichen and the Grindelwaldblick restaurant near Kleine Scheidegg on the Panorama Trail; on the Faulhorn crossing the Berghotel Schynige Platte, the Berghaus Männdlenen and the Berghotel Faulhorn, closed for the winter and expected to reopen on 19 June 2027.
The First gondola is closed for maintenance from 26 October to 27 November 2026; winter operation starts on 28 November. The Männlichen gondola is closed for maintenance until 11 December 2026. The Schynige Platte Railway runs from 5 June to 24 October 2027. Bus 128 to Grosse Scheidegg runs in summer only (2026: 14 May – 18 October). Männlichenbahnen give mid-June to October as the season of the Panorama Trail.
